Are Heated Jackets Safe? 5 Most Common Questions People Have

Are Heated Jackets Safe - Sailwind Heated Clothing

Are heated jackets safe to wear? Can you wear a heated jacket in the rain? Can you wash the heated vests/jackets? The quick (and only) answer to all these questions is a resounding yes. Heated clothing, including jackets, vests, and hoodies that have heating elements inside them, will not cause an electric shock or burn your skin.

1

How do heated jackets work?Is heated clothing safe to wear?

To answer this question, first, we need to figure out how the heated clothing works and what elements provide heat.

The concept of heated clothing has been around for years. When pilots used heated flight suits to keep themselves warm while flying at altitudes for hours on end during World War II. For decades, cyclists have been able to stay warm on the roads by wearing heated jackets, pants, and boots powered by their motorcycle’s batteries.

It seems that heated clothing has come into its own as battery technology has advanced over the years, and small lithium-ion batteries have become more affordable. Several types of heated clothing are now available, including hats, hoodies, slippers, scarves, gloves, and mittens. While heated jackets were once the only type of heated clothing that you could purchase, now you can buy heated vests, pants, socks, base layers, hats, hoodies, slippers, scarves, gloves, gloves, mittens, and hats as well.

The majority of heated clothing these days is powered by a lithium-ion battery combined with carbon fiber heating elements to warm up the clothing. More advanced brands will use more efficient and expensive graphene heating systems. Compared to the days when heated clothing required a motorcycle battery, most heated apparel now utilizes small lithium-ion batteries to power it. It is important to note that battery life varies between products, but most heated clothing can keep the heat on for between 4 and 16 hours after the battery is discharged.

As heated clothing goes mainstream, new converts often have questions about the safety of heated clothing, so we thought it would be helpful to address the most common safety questions we get:

2

What’s inside heated jackets?Metal? Fiber? Hair? Let’s find out.

Inside almost all heated clothing, there are two things: heating elements and clothing materials. During assembly, the back and front of heated jackets are lined with an electronically powered copper/carbon/graphene heating zone. Depending on the type of heated clothing, the manufacturer will add cotton, down feathers, and other materials into the jackets.

Can a heated jacket electrocute me?Can I wear heated clothing in the rain?

No, you will not be electrocuted if it starts raining or snowing or if you are put into a dunk tank wearing a heated jacket or other heated clothing. It is essential to recognize that there are not enough voltages in heated clothing to electrocute a human being if it is used properly. In addition, heated jackets and other heated clothing utilize waterproof membranes to surround the heating elements to protect them against shock risks.

You must get into the 40V range before injuring humans with heated clothing. Most heated clothing operates on 5V, 7.3V, 12V, or 20V batteries, which are not enough to injure a person. A reputable manufacturer of heated clothing will also install safety systems that automatically shut off the heating zone if it detects a problem with the battery or the heating zone. Several safety features can be found in any heated clothing:

Short-cut protection
Smart voltage detection
Over-charge & Discharge Protection
Over Voltage Protection
Over Current Protection
Short Circuit Protection
Over & Under Temperature Protection
LoopBack Protection

In spite of the fact that there is a small chance of feeling a slight tingle if you were suddenly thrown into a pool, most people would not even feel that tingle. As a matter of fact, if you jump into a pool, river, ocean, or any other body of water with your battery in your clothing, you are likely to lose your battery.

Pouring rain, snow, hail, or other precipitation falling from the sky is not going to have any impact on you or the heated clothing’s performance. In most cases, heated apparel will work even after being completely soaked, as long as the battery was not in the clothing when your dunking happened.

4

Do heated jackets cause cancer?Do heated jackets emit radiation?

They are not. Heated jackets are not cancerous of their far-infrared heat radiation.

It’s well known that some kinds of radiation can cause severe and irreparable damage to a human being. And due to the electric element inside, heated clothing might be considered the radiation carrier.

So will there be harmful radiation in it? The answer is no.

To understand it better, you first should know that not all radiation is malignant. For example, the far-infrared heat radiation released by the heated apparel is not harmful at all and is good for blood circulation.
